Are the Grocery Price Wars Coming to an End?
There are some early signs that the grocery price wars may be coming to an end or at least, cooling off. While sorting through the latest prices both in store and in advertised brochures this week, we noticed several indicators. A number of vegetable prices in Coles have risen this week above the usual Hi-lo range and there has been some price increases noted for several products on our weekly watch-list, also in Coles.
We had more difficulty than normal this week as well in selecting essential grocery items to be on our weekly published list that represent exceptional buying value on the day. Our variable list of these specials is a little shorter than normal as a result and may indicate the level of regular discounting and the number of major products being discounted is easing. It could also be as a result of the number of Easter products being advertised but we think it is a trend we will be watching closely in coming weeks.
